One morning, taking advantage of his nurse's absence, in the kitchen, he dressed to go out. The day was a religious holiday, requiring fasting and attendance at services. Our patient refused food and was adamant in his decision to fast and pray.

Before this doctor began his examination I asked him specifically not to test the patient's ability to write. Nevertheless, as the specialist proceeded with a very thorough examination in an atmosphere of growing tension, I saw him place a writing pad before the patient. No doubt the neurologist wished to determine whether the damage had occurred in the sensory writing center in the brain, in the nearby motoric center of the right arm, or in both.
